Welcome to the Hotel Eden…. Director Roger Brunyate writes about the genesis of Henry Mollicone’s Genesis opera, its music, and its message.
Hotel Eden, by Henry Mollicone and Judith Fein, is a funny but ultimately very moving retelling of three stories from the Book of Genesis, transferred to the context of a luxury resort hotel. So Adam and Eve arrive on their honeymoon, only to encounter Adam’s Kabbalistic first wife, Lilith. The bibulous Captain Noah causes the flood by allowing his bath to overflow while his wife is headlining the cabaret downstairs. And Abraham has to do right by his former mistress Hagar, before the onstage birth of his son Isaac to his elderly wife Sarah. These activities are observed and occasionally urged along by a trio of hotel employees in each scene, who may be thought of as irreverent Angels, striving nonetheless to carry out the wishes of the unseen Director. While the music of the biblical characters is richly lyrical, the angels sing in a variety of pop styles ranging from calypso to rock.
During the second week of their residency, artists from Peabody will also present a program entitled Singing Shakespeare. Poems, monologues, and dramatic encounters will alternate with musical settings of Shakespeare texts, including the premieres of operatic scenes by Peabody composers Kevin Clark, Amy Beth Kirsten, and George Lam.
