Each year, the Peabody Opera Department presents one or more potpourris of scenes from opera, simply staged with piano accompaniment. These provide opportunities to perform a wider range of music, often from operas that cannot easily be given full-stage productions. The theme for the first presentation of the 2006–07 season is Romantic Opera, a category that extends from Donizetti and Weber to Puccini and Strauss — the standard repertoire of many opera houses. The program also gives audiences the opportunity of hearing the new intake of students before seeing them in larger productions later in their student careers. Since the music is always chosen to suit the particular singers, detail of the actual excerpts and their casting will be posted in mid-September.

There will be a further potpourri in April, this time concentrating on American opera, and entitled Opera in America.

The photographs show scenes from a previous potpourri.
